Lawful Access Provisions
Michael Geist writes that the government has table a new Lawful Access proposal, which focuses on information disclosure, required surveillance technologies, and new police powers.
In addition to the disclosure of customer information, linked to an identifiable individual, the new laws would also require ISPs to allow deep-packet inspection of internet communications. In addition, the laws provide police with real-time access to communications, as well as preservation of surbscriber information for 90 days.
Geist comments that these laws have been proposed, even though there is limited evidence that current laws stand in the way of police investigations.
